Hotel history with heart. Since 1864.
About us
Anyone who steps into the Zuflucht quickly realises: There is more here than just cosiness. History breathes here. And heart. Since 1864, this house has been a place to stay – born from a simple forest hut and grown with every person who stopped here. Hospitality has never been just a duty, but always a matter of the heart. The hotel history of the Zuflucht goes back a long way, but its heart beats in the present.
Your host family, the Ritters
Heart and soul you can feel
With both feet in the Black Forest. And their hearts are with the guests. When the Ritter family took over the Zuflucht more than a decade ago, it was many things – but not a typical hotel. A house with history, with scars, with character. For two years it was renovated, rebuilt and reimagined – with the aim of breathing new life into the Zuflucht without forgetting its roots. Today, it is a labour of love. A refuge for those in search of a sense of home. And the Ritters are hosts with dedication, clarity and the desire to offer every guest a genuine place to feel at home.
The soul of a place
Hotel history of the Zuflucht
The history of our hotel goes back to 1806, when the Zuflucht began as a simple forest hut – built as a place of shelter for shepherds and forestry workers who sought a place to rest up here. From this hut grew a mountain inn, whose name it owes to its secluded location and its role as a place of refuge at altitude. Later, it became a renowned mountain hotel for many decades, then a youth hostel. The house has been through a lot, has been shaped, forgotten and rediscovered. Before the Ritter family took it over in 2012, things had gone quiet around the Zuflucht for a few years. Today, it once again tells stories – of then and now, in wood, stone and hospitality.
