13 stages of hiking happiness
The Westweg trail
The Westweg is not only the oldest, but also one of Germany’s best-known long-distance hiking trails – over 285 kilometres from Pforzheim to Basel, right through the Black Forest. Between Alexanderschanze and Hausach, the route passes close to the Zuflucht – ideal for a stage stop or as a starting point for day hikers. Awarded as a “Top Trail of Germany”, the Westweg combines landscape, history and the true feeling of long-distance hiking – and the Zuflucht: Peace, hospitality and a bed in the heart of the forest.
Lothar Trail – where the forest heals itself
An adventure trail with history
Anyone who walks the Lothar Trail today follows in the tracks of a storm – and right into the power of nature. After the “Lothar” hurricane in 1999, a unique natural area emerged here, deliberately left to its own devices. Boardwalks, steps and viewing platforms lead through the former storm area and show how the forest is gradually reclaiming it. At the nearby Ruhestein nature park centre, visitors gain fascinating insights and information about the trail – for everyone who not only wants to see nature, but understand it.
Where every metre of ascent is rewarded
Mountain biking
The Black Forest is a true biking playground: full of views, curves, challenges or flow – just as you like it. Thanks to its excellent access to the high-level trails, the Zuflucht is an ideal starting point for demanding tours with real depth. And afterwards: Put your feet up and enjoy the forest views.
Cycling with stories in tow
Legends & myths of the Ortenau
Where the wheels hum today, the past still sometimes whispers: On the themed cycle route “Legends and Myths of the Ortenau”, age-old tales accompany you through forests, villages and mysterious places. The route links nature and legend, well-developed paths and fascinating stops – ideal for anyone who wants their cycling in the Ortenau to offer more than just scenery. A route that awakens the imagination. And brings stories to life.
City stroll, history, experiences for everyone

Freudenstadt is just about 20 minutes from the Zuflucht – charming, vibrant and surprisingly diverse. With Germany’s largest market square at its centre, the town invites you to stroll, linger and explore. Whether a ride on the historic little train through the town centre, an interactive visit to the Experimenta adventure museum, a relaxed café break or a spot of shopping – this is where Black Forest charm meets urban flair. An outing that’s well worth it – for rainy days, stopovers or simply a touch of urban contrast.

Culture, history and lifestyle
Time in nature meets city life
Sometimes you’re drawn out of the forest – into alleyways, stories and completely different sounds. How about a stroll along the Lichtentaler Allee in Baden-Baden, past splendid façades in the footsteps of spa-loving Romans? Or a wander through the narrow lanes of Freiburg’s old town, accompanied by the legendary Bächle, where the sun seems to linger in every corner? Strasbourg is also close by – with its impressive cathedral, the Petite France quarter and an atmosphere that blends tradition and cosmopolitan flair. This is what a city feels like when you come from the countryside – and know exactly where you’ll be returning to.
